Artist Statement
In an article entitled “Writing with a Full Palette” Arthur Mortensen said poetry is not for speed reading but for the ear, as paintings are for the eye.
I go a step further in that sometimes a painting becomes so thick with texture that it appeals to the touch as well as the eye.
Then, when we write about the work or works. We are adding something for the ear either poetry or prose.
Painting reflects feelings of shapes as well as emotion.
A “wall work” or sculpture stands alone for the viewer to bring to the work his feelings and the artist is released from doing so.....until we write an artist statement. Then the artist statement colors the viewers interpretation.
